About
“Children’s Dinner is a piece built around a small theatrical scene: three children sit at the table, waiting for dinner to be served. As they begin to grow impatient, they start playing with their marbles, then gradually extend their playful game to the objects on the table, thus bringing the music to life.
This piece is a direct continuation of Solide, amorphe, fragile et transparent, written in 2021 for percussion and real-time electronics, which explored the musical properties of glass. Here, I wanted to continue this research in a more playful way, using everyday objects and reducing the setup to non-instrumental elements.
The structure is designed so that each object becomes, at some point, the center of musical attention: some objects are used as mallets, others as surfaces, and sometimes both roles at once. Objects can also be combined to form an ephemeral instrument. The way the performers interact and dialogue varies greatly from section to section. From tight entanglements to disparate textures, from high sonic density followed by silences to regular machine-like effects (pulsations), Children’s Dinner is intended as light musical entertainment, while allowing for deep listening and rediscovery of the sonic possibilities of the objects around us.”
