Concordances

2016
for two pianos and two percussionists

Duration: 8 minutes

About

Concordances seeks the coincidences of timbres and gestures. Composed of several tableaux, it explores at times very homogeneous textures, where the playing of the keyboard percussion merges with that of the pianos, and at other times, contrasting relationships between the percussion duo and the piano duo. Reduced to very simple material, the piece develops recurring expressions, opposing playing modes, dynamic and gestural oppositions. It studies the relationships of conformity that can be found within this instrumental formation.

The writing of this piece was motivated not by the desire to give a metaphorical meaning to the sounds or to illustrate an image through sound, but to discover the intimacy that is forged between the timbres of the piano and the percussive timbres, as well as within each duo of the same instrument, and to sculpt these timbres, make them correspond, oppose, respond to, and escape from each other. This piece is a grand gesture, made of shadows, ruptures, silence, and resonances; each tableau is both the beginning and the consequence of another.”
