Zoom et Aksak

2016
for violin and accordion

Duration: 3'30 minutes Dedicated to Marie-Andrée Joerger and Winnie Huang

About

Zoom et Aksak is a piece for violin and chromatic accordion built around the idea of a constant yet non-linear progression. It starts from the infinitely small, with almost-unisons between accordion and violin, creating internal melodies that are almost imperceptible at first, then become increasingly clear. The beating between instruments grows: first as an acoustic phenomenon, then rhythmically in the playing. The inner voices then unfold over these kinds of pulses and play with the irregular rhythms inspired by Balkan music and dances, hence the characteristic term for this music, “Aksak,” which means “limping.””
